I have this Friday off from work as my sister is in town, so I’m experiencing a more “Thank God It’s Thursday” kind of week. Nonetheless, this week the portraits are of my friend for three years now (that long?): Kajanne Pepper.
A friend watched a version of the movie and said “Unrelentingly trashy!”
Another said, “I’ve never felt compassion for a drag queen before.”
Another, “That was sad.”
Another, “That was funny.”
Another, “Not your magnum opus.”
Alas, I don’t know what to think about it. I’ve just submitted it to a festival, my first ever. We shall see. Meanwhile, here are some stills:

I’ve always hated the phrase, “Thank God It’s Friday!” It makes me think of secretaries in sneakers on the bus. But when you’ve worked in an office, you understand the deeper signifigance of a Friday. It is truly the delicious taste of freedom right around the corner. In honor of Friday, which was traditionally associated with Beauty, Luxury, and the Goddess of Love, I am going to post portraits I’ve taken of friends, families, events and places on Fridays accompanied by a little story. To inaugurate this concept, I have chosen my roommate and very close friend for almost 5 years, Ladybug Douglas….
The past six months I’ve been working on a short film about a girl who keeps throwing herself into situations that are obviously not working out for her. My friend Brendon and I wrote it to be a campy, silly farce. During shooting, the material became increasingly darker than we expected. Editing the film was a depressing, emotional experience that eerily reflected (like a funhouse mirror) the romantic goings-on of my own life. The end result lies somewhere between campy and depressing, an apt description of my time here in Portland…
